The Rockford YMCA Rowing Club is gearing up for the 17th Annual Head of the Rock Regatta on October 13, 2002. Each year the Head of the Rock Regatta grows larger with more collegiate and adult rowers. Last years event hosted more than 1500 participants and 85 teams including eight of the Big 10 teams. Registration is in process, and this years event promises to be larger than ever. During the day-long event, more than 400 boats will race the 2.75 mile course from Martin Park, south to just before the Whitman Street Bridge. Men and women competitors will race in divisions including high school, collegiate, and adult divisions, in sculling or sweep configurations.
This years Regatta will include several additions to accommodate more spectators including more seating at the finish line, a short demonstration on rowing at the noon break, two food and beverage stands and trolley service from the Ice House parking lot to the finish line.
The Rockford YMCA Rowing Club is sponsored by the YMCA and serves as the clubs major fundraising event. The proceeds from sponsorship, registration fees and merchandise sales offset the cost of the boathouse and rowing equipment for the Club. Five percent of the proceeds from the Regatta are given back to the YMCA for use in furthering family programs. The major sponsors of the 2002 Head of the Rock Regatta are Insight Communications and Cliffbreakers.

Show your support
Members of the community are invited to show your support for the 17th Annual Head of the Rock Regatta, which attracts Big 10 and Big 8 University Crew teams, college and high school teams from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Iowa, as well as many adult rowing clubs.
In past years, residents along the Rock River from the Riverside Bridge to the
Whitman Street Bridge have held gatherings in their yards to watch this exciting competition. This year, people are offered the opportunity to visibly welcome and show how supportive Rockford is of this unique event. The YMCA is asking all riverfront homeowners to support the Regatta by displaying a favorite banner. A banner supporting your alma mater, special team, or local crew are all welcome.
The YMCA of Rock River Valley Rowing Club will custom design and a post a banner in your yard for race day. These banners will be 15 inches tall and 10 feet long and can have up to 30 letters across. Examples might include: GO BIG BLUE; GO ROCKFORD CREW; WELCOME TO ROCKFORD; GOOD LUCK NOTRE DAME MEN
The cost of the banners installed in your yard will be $75. The banners will be installed on Saturday, October 12. The banners are yours to keep (for next years Regatta!).
For more information and to request your banner, please call Loree Miles at 218-9697 or e-mail her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
