2007 cooling sites for Boone and Winnebago counties

The City of Rockford Human Services Department has released the 2007 summer cooling sites for Boone and Winnebago counties. Vulnerable populations such as seniors and families with children are encouraged to utilize the cooling centers to minimize their risk of heat-related illness. Area residents can gain additional tips to staying cool and keeping safe throughout the summer by accessing the State of Illinois Keeping Cool Illinois Web site at www.keepcool.illinois.gov.

Jubilee Center, 412 N. Church St., Rockford, (815) 316-8752, Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri., 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m.; Wed., 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Salvation Army, 416 S. Madison St., Rockford, (815) 972-1135, Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-4 p.m., capacity, 5-10.

Red Cross, 809 Cedar St., Rockford, (815) 963-8471, Mon.-Sat., 7 p.m.-7 a.m. (If Mayor declares heat emergency, center is open Mon.-Fri., noon-6 p.m. & 24 hrs. on weekend.) Capacity varies; sleeping capacity, 48.

Public Safety Building—open 24 hours.

Rockford Rescue Mission, 715 W. State St., (815) 965-5332, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Check in at 7-7:30 p.m. Capacity, 100 (men’s crisis center).

Water is available at all sites except the Salvation Army.
