The Annual OSF Heritage Run, to be held Sunday, April 25, celebrates 20 years of running through Rockfords historic neighborhoods.
Started in the mid-1980s during Historic Preservation Month, the Heritage Run starts downtown and continues through several historic neighborhoods and on the centennial recreation path.
Runners, walkers and families interested in fitness are invited to participate. OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center and OSF HealthPlans are major sponsors of the event.
The OSF Heritage Run includes a 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) race, a two-mile run, a two-mile family walk and a kids half-mile fun run. The 10k and two-mile races begin at 1 p.m. on Wyman, north of the Zeke Giorgi State of Illinois building. Wheelchair racers are invited to participate in the two-mile race.
The event, which recognizes Rockfords historic neighborhoods, also celebrates the heritage of The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, which founded OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in 1899.
Registration fee for the 10k and two-mile races is $22 before the event and $25 the day of the race. A $5 entry fee is charged for youngsters participating in the kids fun run.
All run and walk participants receive a specially-designed 20th anniversary Cool-Max long-sleeve shirt as well as refreshments and awards. Participants in the kids fun run receive a short-sleeve T-shirt and finishers ribbon. Door prizes also will be awarded to pre-registered runners. Registration and packet pick-up will be from 10:30 a.m. until noon at Stewart Square, 308 W. State St., on the downtown mall.
Cash awards will be given to the top three overall male and female winners in the 10 kilometer race as well as the top female and male masters division (40 and older) 10k winners. More than $1,000 in prize money will be awarded. Awards will also be presented to the overall male and female winners in the 2-mile and 10k races.
Fifteen age divisions are eligible for the races beginning with 6 to 11, 12-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, and 75 and older. Medals will be awarded to the top five finishers in each age division.
