Rockford’s 2nd City Chorus will present its annual show at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 7, at the Belvidere Performing Arts Center in Belvidere High School, 1500 East Ave., Belvidere. This year’s show, “Consider Yourself One of the Family,” features the 2nd City Chorus with its tribute to Broadway & Blues. In addition to the Chorus, special guest quartets “tsunami,” the current Illinois Bronze Medalist Quartet, and “Alchemy,” the 2003 Illinois District Champion Quartet, will grace the Belvidere stage.

2nd City Chorus, tsunami and Alchemy, along with local quartets A CaFellas and Second Opinion, are all members of the international organization known as the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Chorus, tsunami and Alchemy have all fared well in statewide competitions. 2nd City Chorus, formed eight years ago, has been crowned champion of both the 1997 and 2003 Illinois District Spring Contest, and is considered to be one of the top barbershop choruses in the state.

Well-known Chicago actor R. J. Lindsey will perform the duties as the master of ceremonies and will guide the Chorus through its popular selections of Broadway and blues. The Chorus will swell in size as members of the Elgin, Ill., Barbershop Chorus join 2nd City for Blues rendition “Tin Roof Blues” and “Roll Out the Barrel.” The Chorus will perform the show title song “Consider Yourself One of the Family” from the musical Oliver! and will close the show with a gospel selection, “Praise His Holy Name.”

Special guest on this year’s show, Alchemy Quartet, was the 2003 Illinois District Quartet Champion and also represented the district at the 2004 International Barbershop Quartet Contest held in Louisville, Ky. Alchemy brings a unique style to the stage that has made them a favorite with audiences across the Society. Additional guest quartet, tsunami, is the first quartet from the Rockford area in more than 46 years to achieve medalist status in the Illinois District. They are the current Bronze Medalist, having missed out on first place by less than one-half of a percentage point.

Tickets are $20 for prime reserved seats or $15 general admission. In Rockford, call (815) 639-9692; in Belvidere, call (815) 547-4743. Tickets will be available at the door. Afterglow will be held following the show at Belvidere American Legion Hall. Tickets for Afterglow are $8.
