Dig out the bobby socks and poodle skirts. Slick back your hair and throw on your leather jacket. You are encouraged to pack your picnic basket for the grand finale of Movies in the Park, Saturday, Aug. 27 at Sinnissippi Park. The feature is the modern classic Grease. Sing along with Olivia to Hopelessly Devoted, or with John to Greased Lighting.
Centre Events is sponsoring Movies in the Park this year. When this movie was shown two years ago, it was the best attended feature. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., you are invited to participate in a dance contest for fabulous prizes. Practice your hand jive! You might even pick up a new move or two.
Before each movie this season, there has been a pre-program. Aug. 20, Dorothy fell prey, once again, to a twister. Bonzi Productions performed numbers from their production of The Wizard of Oz. This has been a great way to engage the audience before they sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
This event is free to all and is a great collaboration between Centre Events and the Rockford Park District. Sinnissippi Park is a beautiful backdrop for these movies. Family-friendly, free entertainment is a rare commodity, and I hope many Rockfordians take advantage of this wonderful opportunity brought to you by its generous donor, Centre Events. I was very pleased to be a part of the committee that carefully chose the movies.
Many things that happen in this city have numerous volunteers who give careful consideration to the details; they are to be commended. We are hoping to put together future programming that will involve community participation. How about a sing-along at the band shell? We have some unbelievable voices here. Did you hear the audience sing Avé Maria at Bobby McFerrin?
