The highly popular “Rockin’ Summer Movies in the Park” are returning to the Rockford Park District’s Sinnissippi Park Band Shell Saturdays starting July 30 and running through Aug. 27. Centre Events is the sponsor of these family-oriented blockbusters as part of their participation in the Rockin’ Summer program. Attendance to the movies is free of charge.

The line-up is as follows:

July 30—Raiders of the Lost Ark;

Aug. 6—Top Gun;

Aug. 13—Shrek 2;

Aug. 20—Wizard of Oz; and

Aug. 27—Grease.

Events begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 30 with pre-movie programs planned. Early attendees can expect everything from storytellers to swordfighters to costume contests and paper airplane flying competitions, depending on the evening’s movie. Most programs will also provide giveaways from area businesses. More information on the pre-movie programs can be found at www.rockinsummer.com.

Movies will begin at approximately 8 p.m. or dusk.

“This is an excellent way for families to spend time together, outdoors while watching fun, family-friendly movies,” said Corey Pearson, executive director of Centre Events. “Centre Events is thrilled it can bring this popular program back to our community. And, best yet, it’s free to everyone.”

Previously, the “Movies in the Park” program drew an average of 400 people with some films bringing out more than 800 individuals.

In addition to pre-movie programs, there also will be food/snack vendors on site as well as several local organizations offering giveaways and selling items from their gift shops.

At the July 30 movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, there will be a “Raiders” hat/Indiana Jones look-alike contest for people of all ages. Winners will receive prizes from a variety of local museums and other businesses. Additionally, the Rockford Public Library will allow children to try their hand at a “fossil rub.”

The week prior to each movie, the Main Branch Library will have a display showcasing books and literature related to the weekend’s film.

In case of rain or other bad weather, attendees can call the Rockford Park District at 987-8800 after 5 p.m. on Saturdays to determine if the film will be canceled.
