505 Lounge keeps it fresh with new music

Chicago punk pioneers The Effigies to play Friday, June 8

Taking advantage of downtown popularity, 505 Lounge is adding a musical flair to an already-successful family restaurant business.

According to Moe Calvanese, his club is becoming a hot spot for music in Rockford, and he’s prepared to keep bringing in the area’s hottest bands.

“Our goal is to provide fresh, new acts for Rockford,” Calvanese said. “We are doing great so far, and we’ve really only been up and running for about nine months.”

Upcoming shows at 505 include a Friday, June 8, performance by Chicago punk pioneers The Effigies and a show by Chett Saturday, June 9.

Complementing live music, 505 Lounge is working on a full line of entertainment throughout the week, including Karaoke Thursdays, which feature 50-cent tacos, made fresh to order with homemade sauces. Bar customers also are taking advantage of pizza from the menu of adjoining Deli Italia.

Created from the original Little Italy recipe, and made famous by Moe and Frank Calvanese’s mother, Suzi, the pizza is also offered during bar hours in the lounge.

“We will make a pizza at 12:30 [a.m.] if someone wants it,” Calvanese added.

Area musicians are invited to use the downtown club to freshen their chops during 505’s Wednesday Night Jam. The open stage format is hosted by members of Rockford band Higher Ground and other local artists.

505 Lounge is at 505 E. State St. in Rockford and can be reached at (815) 962-3354.
