Alderman raps Perryville vote

By Joe Baker, Senior Editor

Rockford alderman Doug Mark unleashed a barrage of criticism Monday night over the Winnebago County Board’s vote to buy right-of-way to extend Perryville Road to the north.

Mark, R-3rd, said the move is damaging to the city. “Over the past forty years,” he told the City Council, “we have torn the urban fabric of our community.”

Mark said he didn’t wish to attack the county board, but could not agree with what they did.

“This road expansion will not facilitate any industrial park that brings jobs, but an area that pulls from our established neighborhoods,” Mark said. “The northwest side of Rockford has long felt the migration of our city to the east side and, with 70% of the county population in our city, I can only say WE SHOULD EXPECT BETTER THAN THAT. It is already a struggle to gain a foothold for residential and job creation in the northwest area, and with actions like last week the struggle will continue. Smart growth means smart growth.”

Mark said existing roads in the city and county need attention. He said three of the worst intersections for accidents are Perryville and Walton; Perryville and E. State; and State and Bell School Road.

Mark appealed for cooperation to obtain better results from our road investments. As to the Perryville vote he said: “I can only wish this item could be reconsidered.”
