Applications for the AM Music Scholarship Fund are being accepted now until April 1. The scholarship was founded to honor the memory of the late Arthur D. Martinez, a local musician who was killed in an automobile accident Jan. 27, 2001.
Martinezs fiancé, Monica L. Myhre, is the president of AM Music Scholarship Fund and has organized this not-for-profit fund for talented students who plan to further their education in music studies.
Keeping the Music Alive in the Hearts of Our Children is the theme for the Scholarship Fund, and filling out an application to nominate a promising student is a way to ensure the future for one young musician.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Be attending an area high school;
Be a graduating high school senior who wishes to further pursue a musical education;
Have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher;
Be actively involved in a music organization, such as school band, musicals, theater, or self-organized musical groups;
May be nominated by a teacher or parent;
Applications must be completed by a high school teacher, individual music teacher or parent;
Prove that they have applied to a reputable college with the intention of majoring in music.
The following checklist for the nominating teacher or parent will be helpful in the application process:
What is the reason for nominating the student?
In what type of music programs or organizations is the nominee participating?
Applicants statement should include:
Resumé outlining musical background
Photo of applicant (for identifying purposes)
Applicants can send completed application and supporting materials to:

The AM Music Scholarship Fund will be distributed to a talented student who aspires to further his/her education in music. Last years winner received $1,500, and an even larger amount is anticipated for this years distribution. It is suggested that teachers or parents nominate more than one student. A panel of five judges will hold the judging for the scholarship fund; the nominating teachers and applicants will be notified with the audition location and time.
The Second Annual AM Music Scholarship Fund Benefit and fund-raiser will be Sunday, April 6, at Leisure Tyme, 1434 N. Main St. from noon to midnight. The $5 cover includes food, raffles and live music. Entertainment will include Dave Weld & The Imperial Flames from Chicago, Pistol Pete, Dan Voll Combo Loco, Toad Soup, Basement Blues Band, Dove Load, S.O.S, Stonefree, Ken Curtis, Catfish John and Bennett Cooke from Rockford.
The scholarship will be awarded at the Annual RAMI Awards Ceremony April 17, at the Tebala Banquet Facility. Any questions can be directed to Myhre at 815/874-2112 or by e-mail, MMYHRE@Amcore.com.
