American Guild of Organists to hold concert

The Rockford Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present PipeSpectacular III, showcasing the area’s finest organists, at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 10, at Second Congregational Church, 318 N. Church Street.

This popular event for the past two years has drawn large, enthusiastic audiences to hear organ music that is familiar and enjoyable. The instrument will also be used to accompany vocal and instrumental solos. This year’s program will celebrate the 150th birthday of our community, with compositions and composers popular in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Non-organ composers include John Philip Sousa and George Gershwin. A free-will offering will be taken to benefit the chapter’s organ student scholarship fund, encouraging aspiring students to continue study of the “King of Instruments” and its music. The two recipients of the award from last year will perform, along with their teachers. Organists from Rockford’s historic downtown churches are included on the program.
