It’s a traditional Chinese medicine that is used by millions of people around the world. Acupuncture is offered as an alternative therapy to treat conditions including arthritis, fibromyalgia, headaches, sciatica, common cold and digestive disorders.

Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain-relieving chemicals called “endorphins.” These chemicals mimic morphine by attaching to opiate receptor sites found through the nervous system. Endorphins help to block pathways that relay pain messages from the body to the brain, resulting in pain relief.

Wen Guo, M.D., an internal medicine physician at Rockford Clinic, offers this alternative treatment to her patients when they don’t respond to conventional treatment.
