April 28 River District clean-up planned

From press release

River District Association and Centre Events are partnering to host a Spring Clean-Up in Rockford’s downtown River District neighborhood Friday, April 28.

Centre Events is providing free lunch for anyone who participates in the trash pickup that afternoon.

Starting time is noon, however, participants can start at any time throughout the afternoon, and spend a few hours or the whole afternoon picking up trash.

Anyone in the community can participate, and downtown businessowners are being asked to allow one or more of their employees to take some time off that afternoon and help out.

“There are already about 40 people signed up for it,” said Centre Events organizer Erin Jenkins.

The YMCA is also helping by coordinating volunteers from their organization and area of River District. Anyone who wants to help out in that area can contact Dave Moore at 985-2719 or dmoore@rockfordymca.org.

All participants need to start at the MetroCentre, 300 Elm St., to receive their free lunch and to pick up supplies such as trash bags, gloves and maps with routes highlighted. They should also RSVP to Erin Jenkins at 968-5600 or ejenkins@centreevents.com so the MetroCentre can get a head count of how many lunches need to be prepared.

“This is one of the ways River District will be helping the city with this year’s entry in the international Communities In Bloom Competition,” said Kim Wheeler, executive director of the River District Association. “After winning the America In Bloom award last year, we want to continue our efforts to keep downtown clean and beautiful.”

Wheeler added: “I’m very pleased with the response from the local residents and business community so far for the clean-up day. Watch for a fall clean-up date, too.”
