The men have hockey and football, we needed something for the girls. That was the response given by Becca Engebretson when asked, Why roller derby?
With no previous experience and no permanent place to skate, an ambitious group of about 20 women have formed the Rockford Rage. The Rockford Rage will be the structure for a four-team league that hopes to begin play this winter. An exhibition bout is scheduled for November (exact date and location yet to be determined).
The league is negotiating with the Indoor Sports Center and final details have not been worked out.
Each team will be composed of 15 skaters. All skaters must be 21 or older. The teams will compete solely against each other for the first season. After proving themselves worthy, they will then look to join a network of teams from the Chicago, Milwaukee and Bloomington areas.
The Rage is actively recruiting skaters to join the league. Women interested in finding out more information are invited to come to open practice held each Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Skate Co.
