Art Museum opens ‘Young Artist Show’ April 15

Rockford Art Museum’s (RAM) “66th Young Artist Show: Youth Division” opens Sunday, April 15, in RAM’s Anderson Gallery with a free, public opening from 1 to 3 p.m. The opening is designed to coincide with Rockford Area Arts Council’s Family Arts Festival Sunday, April 15, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Riverfront Museum Park.

The Youth Division features 412 pieces of selected artwork by students in kindergarten through eighth grade from Winnebago County public, private, parochial and home schools. Artwork was pre-selected for entry by respective art teachers.

Participating schools include the following: Bloom, Brookview, Carlson, Cherry Valley, Christian Life, Conklin, Froberg, Gregory, Jackson, Johnson, King, Kinnikinnick, Ledgewood, Lewis Lemon, Loves Park, Machesney, Maple, Marquette, Marsh, McIntosh, McNair, Nashold, Nelson, New Milford, Olson Park, Ralston, Riverdahl, Rock Cut, Rockford Christian, Simon, Spring Creek, St. Rita Catholic, Stiles, Stone Creek, Summerdale, Thompson, Walker, Welsh, West View, White Swan, Whitehead, Whitman Post and Windsor elementary schools; Christian Life, Eisenhower, Flinn, Harlem, Kennedy, Lincoln, RESA, Rockford Christian, Roscoe, West, Wilson and Winnebago middle schools; and Ellis Arts Academy, Haskell School, Holy Family Catholic School, Keith Country Day School, Maria Motessori School, Morse Home School, Page Park Center, Parker Early Learning Center, Prairie Hill School, Rockton Grade School, Spectrum School, St. Bernadette School, St. James School, St. Peter Cathedral School, St. Rita Catholic Junior High School and Swan Hillman School.

The annual eight-week Young Artist Show features two separate exhibits—the juried High School Division and the Youth Division—and celebrates young artists, teachers and art programs across the Rockford region. The “66th Young Artist Show: Youth Division” remains on display in RAM’s Anderson Gallery through Sunday, May 13.

Also on display at RAM (in Funderburg Gallery and Kuller Gallery through Sunday, July 8) is “HE & SHE: Vallien and Hydman-Vallien,” featuring 126 sculptures, installations and paintings by world-renowned glass artists Ulrica Hydman-Vallien and Bertil Vallien of Sweden. Exclusively organized by RAM and Sweden’s VIDA Museum only for display at RAM, this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition marks the first time these artists have exhibited together in the United States.

Rockford Art Museum is in Riverfront Museum Park, 711 N. Main St., Rockford. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday; 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Thursday; and noon-5 p.m., Sunday. Regular admission is $5 (free for RAM members), $3 students or seniors, free for children younger than 12.
