Arthritis sufferers undergo area’s first alternative hip replacement surgery

The Rockford area’s first surgeries using a new hip resurfacing technique were performed at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. An alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery, the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing technique relieves hip pain and improves function in a less-invasive manner.

Dr. Mark Barba of Rockford Orthopedic Associates performed the recent surgeries. He is the only orthopedic surgeon in northcentral Illinois trained to perform the new procedure, which received FDA approval earlier this year. Available in Europe since the ’90s, the technique has drawn hundreds of Americans overseas. Now, it is available in Rockford.

“Hip resurfacing is a breakthrough procedure that can help baby boomers who suffer from arthritis and hip pain resume an active lifestyle,” Barba said.

Rather than replacing the entire hip joint, as in a total hip replacement, hip resurfacing entails shaving and replacing only a few centimeters of the diseased bone within the joint. The bone-conserving approach of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System preserves more of the patient’s healthy bone, covering the joint’s surfaces with an all-metal implant that more closely resembles a tooth cap than a hip implant.

Hip resurfacing is ideal for those younger than 60. Traditional hip replacement surgery is usually not recommended for patients younger than 60 because of the increased possibility of requiring future hip joint revision.

Dr. Barba attended medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford. He later completed subspecialty training in joint replacement surgery as part of his Rush Joint Replacement and Research Fellowship. He specializes in reconstructive and joint replacement surgery.
