Artificial turf installed at Indoor Sports Center first of its kind in area

Usually, it isn’t newsworthy when a building has new carpeting installed. This building—and this carpeting—are different.

The Rockford Park District’s Indoor Sports Center on East Riverside Boulevard had new artificial turf put in over the weekend of Oct. 6-7. The new turf is the first of its kind in Rockford and, possibly, in the state.

The Field Turf USA product has a sand-and-rubber infill that helps provide the right mix of cushion and rebound for players. The white soccer lines on the turf will be a permanent part of the turf, and not just painted on the field.

Local athletes of all ages use the indoor soccer field, either for recreational soccer or for international soccer league action, seven days a week, from November through March. According to a Rockford Park District press release, the field will be used for special events during the remainder of the year.

The manufacturer of FieldTurf claims players using their product will sustain fewer turf burns and fewer injuries than those playing on other types of artificial turf or on natural grass.

The company has more than 1,800 fields installed worldwide in a variety of sports venues, including 21 NFL teams using it for their playing fields or in their practice facilities. More than 120 U.S. colleges and universities also use FieldTurf on soccer or football fields.
