Award-winning author, horticulturalist to speak at Botanica

C. Colston Burrell (Cole), award-winning author of Perennial Combinations, will be the featured speaker at this year’s Botanica 2002 Luncheon to be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 30 at Giovanni’s on Bell School Road.

Burrell will share his horticultural knowledge through his slide presentation, “Perennials with Panache: Choice New Plants for American Gardens” with special emphasis on northern Illinois. From collector’s plants to tomorrow’s mainstays, he will explore an exciting palette of plants for woodlands, beds and borders, as well as ways to incorporate them into the garden’s tapestry. Burrell is a principal of Native Landscape Design and Restoration, which specializes in blending nature and culture through artistic design. He also serves as a contributing editor to Horticulture magazine and writes regularly for Landscape Architecture, Fine Gardening, American Gardener and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. In addition to Burrell’s presentation, attendees will also have an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of his book.

Botanica 2002 is sponsored this year by Amcore Financial, Inc. and will begin with the social hour from 11 a.m. to noon. Burrell’s presentation will begin at 12:45 p.m. A spring luncheon is being offered and vegetarian selection, in keeping with the CHIPS program, is also available. The luncheon menu will highlight a springtime fare put together by the chefs at Giovanni’s specifically for Botanica.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to enjoy a silent auction and purchase raffle tickets for items selected exclusively for Botanica. Some of the items being raffled off include a garden painting created by renowned artist Ingrid Dohm, and a handmade garden-designed quilt.

Botanica benefits the educational programming of the Norther Illinois Botanical Society. Seating is limited. Reservations may be made by calling (815) 965-8146 prior to April 20.
