Baaro performs for Charlotte’s Web at Leisure Tyme

Chicago-based Baaro will rock your socks off with their irresistible mix of reggae, African and funk, as they bring April to a resounding conclusion for Charlotte’s Web.

This exciting group will perform at 8 p.m., Friday, April 25, at Leisure Tyme (in the Big Room), 1434 N. Main St., Rockford. They’ve even had to cope with danger in their history. As The Daily Illini explained, “After fleeing their homeland of Ethiopia during the turbulent late ’70s to avoid conflict with a vicious Marxist government that came to power, Zeleke Gessesse, Mulu Gessesse and Meluka Retts began playing African and Jamaican melodies in the reggae clubs of their new hometown, Chicago.”

In the 1980s, under the name Dallol, the band put together a demo tape and began to play around the Chicago area, where they gained a sizeable following. Meanwhile, their demo tape traveled down the length of the country, across the Caribbean, and made its way to Rita Marley in Jamaica, who invited them to come to her country and play their music. Marley was famous in reggae in Jamaica and helped them make the right contacts. Eventually, they were asked to tour with Ziggy and his Melody Makers, and their reputation grew as they made more albums. They produced two platinum and gold albums as Ziggy Marley’s Melody Makers, as well as appearances on Letterman, Soul Train, Arsenio Hall, and British and Italian TV.

In 2001, they were a smash hit at the Rockford Mud Creek Music Fest, and a favorite at last year’s Sinnissippi Summer Series, and a sold-out show at Curly’s last season. With their mesmerizing rhythms and fabulous vocalists, this exciting six-piece band will get you dancing and dancing.
