Barbour Butterfly Garden selected for 2002 Youth Garden Grant

ROCKFORD—Barbour Language Academy’s Butterfly Garden was selected from 1,100 gardening programs nationwide to receive a 2002 Youth Garden Grant from the National Gardening Association. This award-winning youth gardening program will receive an assortment of tools, seeds, and useful garden products donated by leading companies in the lawn and garden industry who recognize that today’s youth are the future of American gardening.

Innovative aspects of the Barbour Language Academy Butterfly Garden:

l Instills value of stewardship for the environment, while developing a stable habitat for native plant and animal species within reach of the student population for ongoing observation and study

l Partnerships with local nature agencies for effective tagging and tracking of Monarch butterflies

l Future field trip: follow migration pattern of Monarch butterflies, as they winter in central Mexico

l Opportunity to further develop the school’s Spanish/English language immersion Magnet theme, and cultivate enduring connections with schools in central Mexico for future collaborations.

l El Mercado: New this year, sponsored by PTO and Student Council: Students create art, crafts, and cultivate garden produce for sale at an end-of-year benefit program called El Mercado (Spanish for “The Market”). Proceeds fund classroom projects, activities and field trips.

l Strong ties with state and local curriculum: enhancing research and expository writing activities, scientific plant and insect life-cycle studies, offering multi-age learning opportunities, team-building activities, and inspirations for artistic expression and exploration.

At Barbour Language Academy, Spanish- and English-speaking students are together in the same classrooms to promote social interaction and language learning through an interactive and cross-cultural setting.
