BCT announces auditions for The Music Man
BYRONThanks to Byron Civic Theatre, members of Byron and surrounding communities have an opportunity to audition this summer to be in The Music Man.
This family favorite tells the story of a traveling salesman, Harold Hill, and his visit to a small Iowa town in 1912. While he is there, he meets and falls in love with the town spinster, Marian Paroo. He also fast-talks the parents of River City into buying into his music program in order to save the morale of the towns children.
Originally produced on Broadway in the 1950s, it ran for 1,375 performances and features hit songs Gary, Indiana, Seventy-six Trombones, Till There Was You and Lida Rose. Auditions for all roles will be held in the Sunderman Theatre located just inside Byron High School at 696 N. Colfax, Byron, on Monday, June 17. Children ages 6 and older will audition at 5 p.m. Children may audition for Winthrop, a boy who is 8-10 years old, or Amaryllis, a girl who is 10-12 years old. Winthrop speaks with a lisp. Children auditioning for Winthrop and Amaryllis may be asked to read from a script provided at the audition. Children may also audition to be in the chorus of townspeople.
The children will be taught a song and then asked to sing it back. Children must be accompanied by an adult and are asked to bring a list of conflicts between the audition date and the performance dates. Parents of children cast in the show will be asked to assist with some aspect of the production.
Adult auditions will be held at 7 p.m. Adults should be prepared to sing a song, preferably from The Music Man and read from the script provided during auditions. Please come prepared to list conflicts between audition time and show dates Aug. 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18. Adult roles include Harold Hill, the traveling salesman; Marian Paroo, the spinster librarian; Mayor Shinn; Eulalie Shinn, the mayors wife. Four school board members who make up the barbershop quartet; Tommy Djilas, a teenager; Zaneeta Shinn, also a teen; Mrs. Paroo, Marians mother, who speaks with an Irish accent; and a large chorus including the traveling salesmen, the Pick a Little Ladies and many townspeople. If you cannot attend the audition on June 17, please call Director Jason McLindsay at 234-5620 prior to auditions for an appointment.
