Editors note: About eight years ago at the Irish Rose, Mike Leifheit and I met a young lawyer who had just returned to Rockford from practicing law in Chicago to help his familys firm. His name may be familiar now, Larry Morrissey. He had some very apt observations about Rockford and what this town could be. Mike and I said, Why dont you run for mayor? Then the offer was extended for several columns in this paper to get his ideas out there and gauge the response. The feedback was very positive, and today he is Mayor-elect Morrissey. We thought our readers who might have missed Morrisseys first public statement would like to see how on message he has remained and amazingly how current many of the issues he brought up still are. So from the front page of our Oct. 1-7, 1997 issue, see (Mike and I believed in him right off the bat) Mayor-elect Morrisseys first column in this week's Commentary section.
