More than 35 belly dancers will don bedlah and slip on finger cymbals for the third annual “Belly Dancers Fight Breast Cancer, One Shimmy at a Time” benefit Saturday, Feb. 25 at Miranda’s Pub and Grill in Rockford. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The show will feature professional soloists, troupes and student dancers from as far away as Iowa City, Milwaukee and Chicago, with roughly one-third of the performers coming from Rockford. Arabic pop music will be played during intermission and after the show, and the audience is welcome to join in for open dancing.

A variety of vendors, a first-time attraction at the event, will be selling bellydance-related merchandise along with other items such as makeup and arts and crafts. Two different raffles will be held offering bellydance-related goodies and a cash prize.

Foregoing typical event fees, Miranda’s Pub and Grill is donating space for the fund-raiser.

“We couldn’t be happier with the venue,” said Atareen, an event organizer and performer. “They’ve been incredibly accommodating to our needs.”

Both as entertainment and a hot fitness trend, bellydance is flourishing in America in many different forms.

“This year will be the most diverse and high-caliber show we’ve had yet,” said Maena, the fund-raiser’s other organizer. “We’ve had an incredible response from the Midwestern bellydance community.”

Cabaret, tribal and folkloric Middle Eastern dance styles will all be represented.

Vendors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the show will begin at 6:30 p.m. A $5 donation is required at the door.

Contact Maena at 621-4273 or Atareen at 703-2080 with any questions.

Miranda’s Pub and Grill is at 6116 Mulford Village Drive, Rockford.
