The Rockford Speedway opens its 59th season of weekly racing programs Saturday night, April 8. Divisions scheduled to race are Late Models, Grand Nationals, American Short Trackers and Road Runners.
The weekly opener follows last weekends successful running of the 29th annual Spring Classic. Machesney Park driver Mike Beyer took the first feature race checkered flag of the 2006 season by holding off Jeremy Miller of Rockton in the Big 8 Series 58-lap main event Saturday night, April 1. Chad Stevens from Orfordville, Wis., finished third, and Jerry Gille from Roscoe came across the finish line fourth. Beyer also won the Big 8 Series Spring Classic feature last season.
The start of Sundays action was delayed almost an hour and a half due to rain. After drying the track, 24 cars from the Wisconsin Challenge Series took the green flag for their 150-lap feature race, sponsored by Chicago International Trucks and Yellow Book. Jeremy Lepak from Wausau, Wis., took the early lead from his pole position, and held on until lap 41 when eventual winner, Steve Rubeck from Cherry Valley, passed him on the inside and never looked back, leading all of the remaining 109 laps. Nathan Haseleu from Marshall, Wis., was runner-up.
