‘Bikes & Kites’ at Midway

High biking and flying will be the theme as Rockford’s Midway Village and Museum Center hosts the region’s first-ever “Bikes & Kites” festival from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 6.

Bikes & Kites will be a turn-of-the-20th century spring celebration featuring high-wheel bicycle demonstrations by the Illinois Wheelmen Bicycle Club on the streets of Midway Village. High-wheel demonstrations will be at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Additionally, there will be kite-flying demonstrations—by the Kite Society of Wisconsin & Northern Illinois—and public kite-flying on the Village Green. Attendees are invited to bring their own kites, or make one on-site. Kite-making workshops are $3 per kite.

Advance registration for kite-making workshops held in the Museum Center is encouraged as space is limited to the first 300 people. Workshops last one hour each to make a guaranteed-to-fly, colorful take-home kite.

Tours also will be offered of historic Midway Village by costumed interpreters.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children (3-17).

Midway Village & Museum Center is at 6799 Guilford Rd. For more info, go to www.midwayvillage.com or call 397-9112.
