Reaching the halfway point of their 60th season, the Rockford Speedway crowned their mid-season champions following the races Saturday night, July 7.

In the NASCAR Late Model division, Ricky “The Rocket” Bilderback won his third feature of the year and is halfway home to claiming his seventh straight season title. He holds a 14-point lead over runner-up Jerry “The Cigar Man” Gille.

Brock “The Newlywed” Behnke picked up his second feature win of 2007 in the NASCAR All-American Sportsmen Division. “Racing” Freddy Nason was declared the mid-season champion. He has a 16-point lead over Doug Bennett.

Tim Melvin is the mid-season champion in the American Short Tracker division. He picked up his third feature win of the season when NASCAR officials called the race after 15 of the scheduled 25 laps because of excessive cautions and time constraints. Melvin has a 9-point lead over Boyce “BJ” Sparkman.

This Saturday night, July 14, marks the return of Doug Rose and his Green Mamba jet car to the track. He will be part of the Mid-Summer’s Nights Scream show. In addition to the Green Mamba, the Felon Monster Truck, Smokey Burnouts, Illinois’ first-ever skid car race, a motorhome swimming pool jump, the school bus figure-8 race, a golf cart demo derby and the hornets will all be at the track. The gates open at 5 p.m., and the action begins at 7:07 p.m.
