Bilderback on pace for sixth title

It’s a familiar saying in the world of sports and opera, “It’s not over until the fat lady sings.” She can be heard loud and clear over the engines of the NASCAR Late Models at the Rockford Speedway.

Even though it won’t be official until Saturday, Sept. 2, I’m going to go ahead and make the announcement that Late Model driver Ricky Bilderback has won his sixth consecutive track championship. He holds a 125-point lead over second-place driver Jeremy Miller with only three more nights of racing on the 2006 schedule.

There’s only one way Bilderback won’t win this year: he’d have to be abducted by aliens and forcibly kept away from the Rockford Speedway for the final three races.

Bilderback has nothing to worry about. To the best of my knowledge, and contrary to what some people say, there hasn’t been a documented UFO sighting in this area in a long, long time.

With his sixth championship in hand, Bilderback is now only one shy of seven-time Late Model champions John Knaus (father of Nextel Cup crew chief Chad Knaus) and Bobby Wilberg.
