Block 5 is here again!
By Molly Fleming, Staff Writer
The Tenth Annual Block 5 festival is back this year, and you know what that means: music, beer and entertainment for the whole family as we endure the sweltering heat of Rockford summers. This year, the Block 5 committee has lined up a great mix of local and international acts for the community, including Slaves on Dope, a group that will add a harder aspect to the festivitiessort of like when the Heavils played last year.
Slaves on Dope hail from Montreal, Canada and bring self-described pure rock to the festival. They are in the midst of an intense tour of America, bringing a dark and somewhat depressing sound from up north. They will perform Friday, June 27 after Sunset Black, Drive and Suspect. Saturdays entertainment includes a show by the Pit Skate Parks stunt team at 4 p.m., followed by Jimmies Chicken Shack, Left Setter, Drop and One Little Sin.
The Block 5 festival as always will be held on the 500 block of E. State St. (right outside the Irish Rose). Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Friday, and 3 p.m. Saturday. Advance tickets for the entire weekend are $10, and can be purchased at the Metro Centre box office and all CentreEvents locations. Otherwise, tickets are $10 at the gate per day. Sponsors for the 2003 Block 5 festival include Coors, Skyy Vodka, Jack Daniels, Bacardi, WXRX, Pepsi and The Sweden House. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit Northern Illinois AIDSCare Network and the River District.
