‘Blow the Whistle on Asthma’ kickoff on July 31

The kickoff for the national walkathon, “Blow the Whistle on Asthma” will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31 at Midway Village & Museum Center, 6799 Guilford Rd., Rockford. The event is open to anyone interested in walking in the Sept. 29 fundraising event for the American Lung Association, northern service area.

Honorary chairpersons David Shoberg, M.D.—a local pediatric pulmonologist—along with Mike Robinson from WREX-TV, Rockford, will host the kickoff. Team packets and asthma information will be available, along with a complimentary continental breakfast for all who attend.

Proceeds from the Asthma walks will be used to fund clinical research projects done both at national centers and in Illinois, CampSuperkids for severely asthmatic children, and Asthma 101, a school-based asthma management program.

An estimated 26 million Americans suffer from asthma. Of those 26 million, approximately 9 million are children. Asthma is responsible for more lost school days than any other chronic disease. Even more frightening is the 55% increase in the death rate from asthma over the last 20 years.

To register for the kickoff breakfast, or learn how to get your family or company involved, please contact Kathy Sullivan at (815) 962-6412 or 1-800-788-5864, or log onto www.lungil.org to register or download forms.
