Blow the Whistle on Asthma set for Sept. 29
The national walkathon, Blow the Whistle on Asthma is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 29 at Midway Village and Museum Center, 6799 Guilford Road. The 5k (three-mile) walk will weave through the historic village and surrounding nature trails. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the walk start time scheduled for 10 a.m.
Honorary chairpersons David Shoberg, M.D., local pediatric pulmonologist, along with newscaster Mike Robinson of WREX-TV Rockford, will co-host the opening ceremony. An asthma informational public forum is also planned immediately after the walk. T-shirts, whistles and refreshments are all included in the event offerings, with special fundraising prizes awarded for teams or individuals wanting to achieve various funding goals.
Proceeds from the Asthma Walks will be used to fund clinical research, done both at national centers and in Illinois, Camp Superkids for severely asthmatic children, and Asthma 101, a school-based asthma management program. It is estimated that 26 million Americans suffer from asthma. Of those 26 million, approximately 9 million are children. Asthma is responsible for more lost school days than any other chronic disease. Even more frightening is the 55 percent increase in the death rate from asthma over the last 20 years.
National sponsors include: GlaxoSmithKline and Toyota Prius, and locally are: National City, Gambino Realtors, AstraZeneka, Rockford Heating & Air, along with media sponsor WREX.
