Blues Hawks, Bone Shed advance in ‘Battle of the Bands’

Third round of event set for 8 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 2, at JT’s Bourbon Street Grille

For the last two weeks, JT’s Bourbon Street Grille has been the site of the first Battle of the Bands. Two local acts have been named weekly winners and will move on to perform in future competitions.

In week one, Freestyle challenged the Blues Hawks. Although Freestyle delivered a powerful and energetic performance, it wasn’t enough to defeat the four-time RAMI Award winners. The Blues Hawks will now move on toward the grand prize of $1,000. Freestyle, however, remains in the hunt as a wild card participant, which could mean future performances and a spot in the finals.

With a last-minute announcement that two bands would not be competing, week two contained only one set of music. Bone Shed delivered a loud and strong set. Mixing powerful rock lyrics and vocals that echoed that of Pantera and Pearl Jam, with powerful guitar work and a driving rhythm section, the Rockford-based trio proved it belongs in the contest, and will be a tough act to beat as it moves on in the competition.

With four weeks of preliminary rounds remaining, 16 bands are scheduled to compete. Looney, Meleos Cosmos, Goon Squad, Propa Intro, Reign of Ruin, Stereotype, Soul Tree, Split Decision, Stone Free, Tres Elliot, Burnt Side, Iron Cross and The Last Place You Looked will perform in upcoming rounds. Preliminary competitions are scheduled to conclude Wednesday, Aug. 23. The finals will be made up of weekly winners and a wild-card entry, which will all perform again to determine the first-, second- and third-place finishers.

Dates for the finals will be announced Aug. 23. Bands are asked to show up at least 45 minutes before their time slots to ensure proper sound levels and start times. Musicians are also encouraged to call JT’s Bourbon Street Grille to confirm time slots. The club can be reached at 964-4400.

A spread of Cajun food, including blackened and fried catfish, chicken wings, gumbo, rice dishes and fresh cornbread, is being offered each week during the Battle of the Bands. Customers can purchase the all-you-can-eat buffet for $5.99 during live entertainment.

JT’s Bourbon Street Grille is at 1407 N. Main St. in Rockford. Music starts at 8 p.m. Admission is free. For a list of competing bands, see The Rock River Times’ Vibe Entertainment section.
