Boone Co. Health Dept. responds to smallpox threat

The Boone County Health Department is offering information sessions on smallpox disease and vaccination to Boone County businesses, service clubs and organizations, local police, sheriff’s and fire departments, beginning Jan. 6. These 30-minute information sessions are in response to the federal government’s smallpox vaccine initiative. The health department seeks to educate the community on smallpox disease, smallpox vaccine and the smallpox vaccination plan. The federal government plan does not recommend vaccination of the general public at this time. Boone County businesses and organizations may schedule a session for 10 people or more by calling Malafu Tiatia at 544-2951, ext. 237. There is no charge for the information sessions.

The same information sessions will be presented to the public on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at the following sites:

Boone County Council on Aging Keen Age Center, 2141 Henry Luckow Lane, Belvidere, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Belvidere High School Performing Arts Center, 1500 East Ave., Belvidere, 7 to 8 p.m.
