Brooke Road Church to host St. Lucia Festival
Brooke Road United Methodist Church will celebrate the Advent season with a special worship service and meal celebrating the Swedish tradition of St. Lucia on Saturday, Dec. 8. The worship service will begin at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary and will include readings in Swedish, the procession of the star boys, Swedish carols, and the crowning of St. Lucia. The service will be followed by a traditional Swedish holiday feast at 7 p.m. in Founders Hall.
St. Lucia was a young Italian woman who lost her life because of her Christian faith in the early years of the church. Tradition says that St. Lucia visited Sweden and took food and drink to the hungry and poor in the province of Varmland. She wore her white gown and crown of candles to light the way. This service and feast remembers her faithfulness and service, and reminds us of the call to the church to be sacrificial and just in its ministry.
Brooke Road United Methodist Church is located at 1404 Brooke Rd. on Rockfords southeast side, near the intersection of 11th Street and Brooke Road. The first floor is handicapped accessible from the west parking lot. For more, call the church office at 398-8914, or e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. There is no cost for the event.
