Burpee Museum to unveil ‘Jane’—its newly discovered dinosaur

By

The Burpee Museum of Natural History will unveil new work completed on its recently discovered dinosaur, “Jane,” during PaleoFest at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22. This rare find represents the largest section of skeletal remains still in the 4,000-lb. rock matrix as it was found on last year’s expedition to the Montana Badlands led by Burpee paleontologist Mike Henderson. Other rare finds on display include casts of a Nanotyrannus skull on loan from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and a huge T-rex skull on loan from Peter Larson of the Black Hills Institute for Geological Research in Hill City, S.D.

The Burpee’s annual PaleoFest will be Saturday through Sunday, Feb. 22 and 23, at the Burpee Museum, 737 N. Main St., Rockford. Lew Crampton, president/CEO of the Burpee, says, “This year’s program will be the best ever and will include lectures and workshops for all ages about dinosaurs and dinosaur lore. The public will have an opportunity to meet the ‘Jane Team,’ who discovered and unearthed this rare dinosaur, and learn about all the exciting details of the Nanotyrannus versus the juvenile T-rex controversy, which has scientists from around the world coming to Rockford.” Is Jane just a young T-rex or it she a new genus of dinosaur? Details of this age-old riddle will be discussed. PaleoFest 2003 is for the entire family, with DinoBlast, craft and fun activities for children scheduled throughout the entire museum.

Dr. Michael Novacek, curator of Paleontology and senior vice president and provost of Science at the American Museum of Natural History, will be the guest speaker Saturday evening at a dinner at 6 p.m. at Giovanni’s on Bell School Road. Dr. Novacek is the recipient of the first Roy Chapman Andrews Society Distinguished Explorer. He will talk about his exciting adventures and narrow escapes in the Gobi Desert.

For information log on at www.burpee.org. Tickets for all lectures, workshops and the dinner talk at Giovanni’s are on sale now. Members of the museum receive discounts on all sessions including the dinner talk.
