CCS begins first west side housing development
With funding approved by the City of Rockford and the Illinois Housing Development Authority, September 4 marked the date of a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony for Lincoln Wood Estates, a 26-home subdivision to be developed on the former site of the Valerie Percy Homes at Pierpont Avenue and Green Street.
The groundbreaking took place at 1 p.m. with Mayor Doug Scott in attendance.
This development is designed to provide affordable home-ownership opportunities in west Rockford in a mixed-income environment and will be the first development of its kind in the area in many years. The project is being launched by Comprehensive Community Solutions, Inc., a community housing development organization that also directs YouthBuild Rockford. CCS has rehabilitated or constructed 41 units of affordable housing in the last five years, including six new single-family homes.
CCS owns the Lincoln Wood site, has obtained zoning and subdivision approval and has secured the balance of the financing for the development. All of the homes are designed for families and will be a mixture of market rate and assisted units. The development will have a significant positive impact on the community by supporting property values and enabling families to secure funds to invest in their homes. The impact of this development will support other community and neighborhood development efforts in the area. It is located one-half mile from Springfield Avenue, currently undergoing major improvements. Several retail and commercial developers plan investments on the street which will allow Lincoln Wood residents to benefit from the new services.
