Center for Learning in Retirement gears up for summer classes

Rock Valley College Center for Learning in Retirement offers events for seniors beginning June 4 and running through Aug. 24

Seniors—watch your mailbox! Look for the new 2007 summer schedule of classes from Rock Valley College’s (RVC) Center for Learning in Retirement (CLR).

Those of you who are members of the CLR will enjoy new opportunities that begin June 4 and go through Aug. 24. Short-term, non-credit classes are designed to enrich the body, mind and soul. For the first time, the CLR will feature a class for beginning and intermediate golf enthusiasts. This class will be at the Elliot Golf Course.

Several exercise classes include “Chair Exercises,” “Tai Chi” (which is featured on television commercials) and “Quigong Exercises with Self-Massage.” The Golden Eagles Fitness Program begins Wednesday, May 23, and ends Friday, Aug. 24. The class meets from 7 to 8:30 a.m., (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) at RVC’s Physical Education Center. An orientation for new people is scheduled for Monday, May 21, at 7:30 a.m., in the Physical Education Center. This exercise class is led by faculty and is open for members of CLR.

In addition, entertaining you will be Mike Webb with the 2007 summer Starlight Theatre program. Unique to this area, the dazzling “HE & SHE” exhibit at the Rockford Art Museum features glass pieces created by a Swedish couple. This exhibit is one you would expect to travel to Chicago or New York to view. A historical tour of the Benson Stone Company is on the schedule and will end with a buffet lunch.

Other stimulating features include the John Barnes Myofascial Release Approach to Pain, Great Short Stories, led by Ken Biddle, and a class about the Lac du Flambeau people and their customs. You may just want to relax with one of the following: Nimble Fingers, Great Discussions or playing Board Games.

Membership dues are $22 per year, which enable you to register for classes, go on trips and attend social events.
