Rockford’s favorite sons will close the 20th anniversary celebration of the On The Waterfront Festival presented by Associated Bank. Illinois’ largest music festival, On The Waterfront, announces that Cheap Trick will perform at this year’s celebration on Sunday, Aug. 31 on the Miller Lite Great Lawn presented by Y95. Reserved seat tickets go on sale at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 31 at all MetroCentre and CentreEvents ticket outlets, by phone at 968-5222, or on the Web at www.centreevents.com. Reserved seat tickets are $19.50 in advance and $24.50 the day of the show.

Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander, Bun E. Carlos and Tom Petersson are the Rockford musicians who make up this English Rock-inspired band. Cheap Trick signed on with Epic Records in 1976, releasing its first album one year later. Cheap Trick is known for unique and darkly humorous lyrics, a pack of devoted fans, and Nielsen, who uses a different guitar for each song and throws handfuls of guitar pics to screaming fans.

The group has put out four platinum albums, three gold LPs, one No. 1 single (“The Flame”), seven top 40 hits and one gold certified video compilation.

Me,” “Dream Police,” and a remake of Elvis Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel.” Cheap Trick’s album Heaven Tonight was recently named one of the “Coolest Albums of All Time” by Rolling Stone magazine. Cheap Trick has also written several original soundtracks for movies such as Encino Man, Caddyshack II and Gladiator.

Cheap Trick found that its popularity came back in the ’90s when many alternative bands began to announce they were heavily influenced by the style of Cheap Trick. The group released a “greatest hits” collection in 1991 right after its break from Epic Records.

This will be the third time Cheap Trick has performed at On The Waterfront.

“It is only fitting that we close our 20th anniversary celebration with the group who put rock music on the map in Rockford,” said Becky Genoways, president and CEO of On The Waterfront, Inc.

As Rick Nielsen inscribes in many of his guitars, “You Know You Like It,” so come out and see them rock the stage at this year’s On The Waterfront Festival.
