Cheney visit, demonstration set for DeKalb Sept. 18

If Vice President Dick Cheney appears at a Sept. 18 fund-raiser in DeKalb for Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-14), he will be met by about 300 to 400 protesters, according to protest organizer James Johnson of DeKalb. Johnson said he wanted a peaceful demonstration to primarily protest the war in Iraq.

However, Johnson said other groups he’s contacted are also concerned with what they perceive as the Bush administration’s attack on civil liberties and gay marriage.

Johnson asks participants make only hand-held signs, and assemble at 4 p.m., at Northern Illinois University’s Central Park near Stadium Drive. From there, Johnson said demonstrators will march on the sidewalk to the university’s convocation center, where the fund-raiser will be held starting at 4:30 p.m.

The convocation center is located on West Lincoln Highway. Those wishing to attend the fund-raiser may purchase tickets for the 6:30 p.m. dinner for $150 through Hastert’s campaign office at (630) 879-1988. Cheney is scheduled to be in DeKalb at 4:30 p.m.
