Chili Shoot-Out Oct. 1 at Rockford Speedway

The smell of chili peppers and onions cooking, ground sirloin being sauteed with just the right spices and music from live bands generate the rhythm of the day.

It’s the 25th Silver Anniversary Chili Shoot-Out Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Rockford Speedway on Rt. 173 and Forest Hills Road. The event starts at 11 a.m. with local bands Southern Heritage followed by The Stevee Nix and The Missing Links.

More than 50 cooking teams gather in a 12,000-square-foot tent to compete for the best chili recipe and the best in showmanship. Also competing will be local radio personalities from 96.7 The Eagle, Q98.5, 97ZOK and 1440 WROK. Samples of the hottest chilis in the area are available along with ice cold Budweiser and other festival food. Admission is $4 with discount coupons available at all Road Rangers.

The Chili Shoot-Out is a heritage event in the Rock River Valley, raising more than $85,000 for local charities in the area. A portion of this year’s event will benefit the Roy Gayle youth baseball field.
