City of Gardens celebrates Rockford in Bloom

Winners of the Fourth Annual Rockford in Bloom Community Beautification Awards will be announced Wednesday, Oct. 8 at an awards banquet beginning at 6 p.m. at Cliffbreakers Restaurant. The City of Gardens’ Rockford in Bloom Community Beautification Awards recognizes those businesses and organizations that enhance the attractiveness of our community through beautification efforts. “These beautification efforts are invaluable, and we commend this year’s nominees for their notable efforts,” said Ruth Miller, program director of the City of Gardens. The benefits of beautification increasingly are becoming more evident and go beyond just making people feel good, Miller added. Forty-six nominees were submitted by the general public for this year’s awards program in categories ranging from large business to adopted spot. Judges selected the winners based on seven criteria—design and layout; plant selection & variety; plant health; maintenance; color theme; originality; and visual impact. Tickets for the dinner are $35 per person. The event will also feature a raffle and include an original painting by Ingrid Dohm, a botanical quilt from the Sinnissippi Quilters Guild, earrings from Clodius, services by Tree Care, and a gardener’s delight basket from the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. For information, call 987-1689. Tickets may be purchased at the door. This event is sponsored in part by Bank One, which has been a sponsor of City of Gardens programs including the hanging basket program.
