Clean out those closets and help the environment

LOVES PARK—Just in time for that spring cleaning project, Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful’s Spring Clothing Drive will be Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the seven area Hilander food stores.

Acceptable items for the Drive include all clothing, shoes (tied together), belts, stuffed animals, purses, bedding, curtains, towels and other soft goods. Place all items in plastic bags—no boxes or hangers. All items should be in good, reusable condition. The clothing will be distributed to needy people worldwide, primarily in the U.S. and Third World nations.

“This is a great opportunity to provide people in need around the world with clothing that is merely taking up space in your closets,” said Lori Gummow, executive director of Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful.

According to Gummow, last fall’s Clothing Drive collected a record 102,000 pounds of clothing and soft goods from area residents. Since the clothing drives began in October 2000, area residents have recycled more than 1 million pounds of clothing and soft goods with the annual May, July and October drives.

Participating Hilander food stores are located at: 2601 N. Mulford Rd., 2514 S. Alpine Rd., 3710 N. Main St., 3134 S. 11th St., and 1715 Rural Rd.; 2206 Barnes Blvd., Cherry Valley and 4860 Hononegah Rd., Roscoe.

Additional volunteers are needed for the Clothing Drive. Those interested in volunteering can contact the office at (815) 637-1343 or e-mail
