Clothing, metals recycling drives save tons from landfills

LOVES PARK—Thanks to the efforts of more than 1,500 environmentally conscious families and Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful, more than 60 tons of metal and 75,980 pounds of clothing and soft goods were saved from the local landfill during the Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful Spring Metals Drive (May 1) at the Machesney Park Mall, and the Spring Clothing Drive (May 8) at all seven Hilander store locations.

According to “Green Queen” Lori Gummow, executive director of Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful, more residents participated in this year’s metals and clothing drives than in 2003’s spring drives.

“It is exciting to see more residents recycling by taking advantage of these free services,” said Gummow. “Not only do we save these items from occupying local landfills, they will see new life through either reuse or recycling.”

The next Metals Recycling Drive will be Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Machesney Park Mall parking lot (near J.C. Penney’s). Future Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful clothing recycling drives will be held Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at all area Hilander locations.

“These recycling drives offer free opportunities to make a positive impact upon our environment and clean out their closets, garages and basements,” said Gummow.

Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful is in need of additional community volunteers to assist them in future recycling drives. Those interested in volunteering with Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful can call (815) 637-1343, or e-mail
