RMTD to donate Oct. 11th

revenues to United Way Sept. 11th Fund

In recognition of the one-month anniversary of the Attack on America, and in memory of the victims, the Rockford Mass Transit District, in cooperation with the City of Rockford, the City of Loves Park and the Village of Machesney Park, will donate all proceeds from its fareboxes and ticket sales on Oct. 11 to the United Way September 11th Fund. RMTD employees will also raise funds by participating in an internal silent auction and by purchasing casual day stickers.

“The spirit of giving in this country has been phenomenal,” states RMTD Executive Director Richard McVinnie. “The District couldn’t let an opportunity go by without doing our share to help those so tragically affected by the attack. We know our staff and passengers will embrace this opportunity to help this effort.”

RMTD encourages everyone in Rockford, Loves Park and Machesney Park to ride the bus that day through various promotions. In addition to donating the monies from the farebox, RMTD will donate proceeds from ticket sales at the Transfer Center to the fund as well. The District sells 10-Ride tickets to adults, students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Rockford Mass Transit will also sell its Unlimited Ride Passes for November. Normally, the Unlimited Ride Pass would not go on sale until Oct. 20, but in order to support the September 11th effort, the passes will be offered for sale on Oct. 11. The monthly Unlimited Ride Pass normally sells for $36 but is currently being discounted for $30. Proceeds from riders on the Paratransit service will also be part of the donation.

On Oct. 11, RMTD will also host a number of activities including displaying flags on all buses, and drop off bins for anyone wishing to make a donation of medical supplies or other badly needed supplies requested by the Red Cross. RMTD employees will also be given an opportunity to pledge a blood donation to the Northern Illinois Blood Bank.
