Community scavenger hunt set for ‘Make A Difference Day’

On Oct. 23, the Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement (JACCE) at Rockford College will be sponsoring “Make a Difference Day” 2004 to help area nonprofit organizations. This year, Rockford College is working in partnership with the Rock River Valley United Way, which obtained “Wish Lists” from community agencies of items they need to better serve their constituencies. The JACCE will be working in correlation with United Way to obtain items on these “Wish Lists” to donate to the respective organization.

To accomplish this goal, the JACCE is planning a community scavenger hunt, where students from Rockford College will go door-to-door requesting items that have been identified by area agencies. Students will be assigned to teams and teams to neighborhoods. Several Rockford College clubs and organizations will compete to collect the most items, and prizes will be given to the victors. The event will begin at 10 a.m. on the first floor lobby of the Rockford College Burpee Center and lasts until noon.

“Make A Difference Day” is the most encompassing national day of helping others—a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA Weekend Magazine, “Make A Difference Day” is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. The next event is Saturday, Oct. 23. Millions have participated. In 2003, 3 million people cared enough about their communities to volunteer on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns.
