OregonA limited number of Earth Machine backyard compost bins are available for sale at the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department. The bins will be sold at cost, $40, while supplies last. The retail price for this model is around $80.
The Earth Machine compost bin is 33 inches by 33 inches in size when assembled, and holds about 80 gallons (10.5 cubic feet) of materials. The bin is made from 50 percent post-consumer recycled plastic and has a 10-year warranty. It comes with a 32-page instruction booklet and twist pegs to secure the unit to the ground.
Homeowners can use this composter to recycle fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds and other food waste from their kitchens as well as grass and leaves to create rich humus for enriching lawns, gardens and house plants.
Using a backyard composter is an excellent way to make a great soil amendment and, at the same time, decrease the amount of waste that has to be hauled to a landfill. This saves energy and landfill space.
Other items available at the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department are compost aerators, worm composting (vermiculture) bins, kitchen food scrap containers, and books on composting and vermiculture, as well as many other books and videos about recycling and waste management.
The Department is at 909 W. Pines Rd., Oregon, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Info: 732-4020.
