Many consider Dmitri Shostakovich to be the greatest composer of the 20th century, and music centers around the world are celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birthday this year. The RCCA and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble will also honor him. The program will include his Prelude and Scherzo, as well as the Sextet for Strings in A major, Op. 48 by Antonin Dvorak and Octet for Strings in E-flat major, Op. 20 by Felix Mendelssohn.

The ensemble’s fall 2006 North American tour takes it to 12 cities, with Rockford being its only engagement in Illinois.

The Ensemble, consisting of the first chairs of the chamber orchestra Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, specializes in larger chamber works, from quintets to octets, with players who customarily work together, instead of the usual string quartet with additional guests.
