Counseling Center receives $3,000 grant

The Howard D. Colman Fund of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois awarded a $3,000 grant to Rockford Sexual Assault Counseling in support of the counseling center’s “Strong Self Plus” program for girls. The grant came as a result of the Invensys Employee Grant Review Committee’s recommendation and endorsement.

The grant will fund the eight-month “Strong Self Plus” program for adolescent girls ages 11-17. A staff therapist leads the program and meets with the girls an hour a week. Some of the topics covered in the Strong Self Plus program include healthy relationships, personal safety and anger management. Outcome measures have shown that girls who participate in the program are more likely to have increases in self-esteem and knowledge of risk factors and more likely to learn how to set goals.

The program concludes with a project that participants themselves design. Past graduates of the program have written poems about their growth experiences and put them together in a book.

The Howard D. Colman Fund was formerly the Barber-Colman Foundation. For more information about the “Strong Self Plus” program, contact the counseling center at 815-636-9811.
