FREEPORTDowntown Freeport will be alive with hot rods, classic cars, good music and good food starting at 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 5 for Cruise Night 2006. The event will last until 10 p.m., with the cruising of the classics and a street dance beginning at 7 p.m.; the dance will feature the ever-popular band Newport Project.
If you are planning to watch the parade of classics, you will want to get there early to cherry pick the best spot on the routefrom Douglas to State to Stephenson to VanBuren.
Parking space has been expanded for participants and spectators alike, with reserve space available for $3 per car. The West Lot is the municipal lot across from the highrise U.S. Bank building; the East Lot is at Adams Avenue between Stephenson and Exchange streets across from Sanitary Cleaners.
The Cruise Night Committee has tweaked some of last years newer attractionsthe Midas Muffler Rapping Contest will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and the Dan Phillips 66 Burn-Out Contest will be adjacent to the East Lot on Exchange Street from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
There is no cost to enter the cruise, participate in the contests or to just come down and enjoy the evening. Contest prizes will be awarded, and participants may purchase photos of the burn-outs.
