According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Cook County Sheriff candidate Tom Dart is among the thousands on Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley’s clout list. Dart received nearly $14,000 from the Rockford area.

First Rockford Group owner Sunil Puri’s total contribution accounted for about 74 percent—or $10,202—of those donations. Citizens for Scott, the political action committee formed to support former Rockford Mayor (now Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Director) Doug Scott’s political endeavors, donated nearly $1,000, according to Illinois state election records.

Scott stands behind Dart: “I don’t see anything wrong with anyone putting in a good word for somebody,” he said. He described Dart as an honest and hard-working public servant. Scott stressed he believed Dart would recommend qualified people.

Puri, who’s out of the country until July 17, was unavailable for comment.

Local unions gave Dart $2,750. Those labor organizations included IBEW Local 461, Illinois State Council of Carpenters and Laborers Local 32. IBEW Local 461 Business Manager John Vester said he’d only been in his position a short time: “I really would be speaking without any background or knowledge.”

Laborers Local 32 Business Manager Tom Dalsanto didn’t return telephone calls.
