Dance Review: Joel Hall Dancers present their Spring Concert

The Joel Hall Dancers presented their Spring Concert at Northeastern University in Chicago March 4 and 5. A graduate of Northeastern, Joel Hall has become an outstanding teacher of jazz and has earned international recognition and received many awards for his contribution to dance. His choreography expresses both the classic and modern idioms.

The concert opened with “The Silkman Suite” featuring a stellar saxophonist. Ray Silkman in Pied Piper fashion surrounded by the gyrations of the entire company. Merrick Mitchell, featured in “Great White Cheddak” was brilliant, while Vanessa Truvillion and Duwane Pendarvis’ duet in “Etude en Maison #418” was brilliant.

“Girlfriend,” choreographed by Associate Artistic Director Nancy Teinowitz, used the barre as its focus. The music by Annie Lennox gave a hip-hop feel to the performance. Tracey Hodgkin-Valcy was a lyrical delight.

I highly recommend this outstanding dance company. If we are fortunate to have them perform locally, or if you can see a Chicago-area show, do plan to attend.
