After having Father’s Day weekend off, former Roscoe resident Danica Patrick and the Indy Racing League (IRL) will get back to work this Sunday, June 24. Patrick and the IRL will be in nearby Newton, Iowa (about a four-hour drive from Rockford), for the inaugural Iowa Corn Indy 250.

The green flag is scheduled for noon Sunday and will be televised on ABC. This 250 lap/218.75-mile race will be the eighth of the 17-race season.

Through the first seven races of the season, Patrick is seventh in the points standings. She has 168 points and is 85 behind leader and Andretti Green racing teammate Dario Franchitti. Patrick had started all seven races and finished outside the top 10 only twice. She will be looking to improve on her career-best third-place finish a week ago at Texas.

Season points leader Franchitti not only won this year’s Indianapolis 500, but hasn’t finished any of the first seven races out of the top 10. He’s been in the top five for six of his seven starts.

Tony Kanaan, another Patrick teammate at Andretti Green, is in second place. He is 12 points behind Franchitti. The fourth member of the team, Marco Andretti, is in 17th place, 144 points back.
